About

Kamra Hakim (b. 1992, Minneapolis) is an Igbo trans American artist, curator and arts administrator based in the Catskills on Lenapehoking. Their practice moves across sound, sculpture, soil and sanctuary, and treats the ears, throat and breath as old technologies for carrying sensation and knowledge across time. They are currently an artist-in-residence in the Making Space program at Makerspace YK in Yellowknife.

In 2018 they founded Activation Residency, a fiscally sponsored artist residency that has supported more than 450 artists through programs built around radical accessibility, outdoor learning and care. Since 2022 they have stewarded Forest Fringe Farm, eight acres of forest, meadow and wetland in Bethel, New York, where the residency now makes its home.

Their book Care Manual: Dreaming Care into Being (Flower Press, 2022) became the basis for a five-part experiential learning series at Dia Chelsea and Judson Memorial Church the same year. Before founding the residency they worked in arts administration at Pratt Institute, Columbia University's Arts Administration program and Independent Art Fair.

Their debut Verdant Banks (2021) was made with Alzena Bell, and their full-length Shift Circuit (2024) was released on people | places | records. Their second album, Half Star, arrives in 2028. They also write the newsletter Source Material.

Work with me

1:1 sessions

For artists and organizers who have been making public work for years and want to sort out what is theirs from what they have picked up along the way. Sessions are held online and I keep a few spots open each month.
